Sugarcane juice is known as a refreshing juice in Vietnam. You will find it the perfect choice to slake your thirst. Besides Vietnamese coffee, it is the top choice for locals and visitors from all over the world. Why it is famous and why should you try sugarcane juice in Vietnam? Here are the reasons why.
Sugarcane contains many nutritious values that improve your health and boost your energy up. You would be fully awake after a cup of sugarcane if you feel a bit tired and thirsty. A great deal of protein that you get from a cup of sugarcane is also good nutrition. Moreover, there are a lot of antioxidants and mineral which would benefit your skin, prevent acne and pimples.
The hot weather makes sugarcane juice the perfect drink for people in the Southern region, especially in Ho Chi Minh City. All year round, you are most likely to find some vendors selling sugarcane juice on the streets and in local markets along with other cooling drinks like coconut juice, "sam", and "sam bi dao". These vendors are easy to spot because you will see their stalls equipped with a crushing sugarcane stalk machine. If you worry if it meets the standard of food safety or not, we would suggest some addresses of beverage stalls near the city center below:
72 Nguyen Thong Street, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City
125A Phan Dinh Phung Street. Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City
93 Cach Mang Thang 8 Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City
It would not cost you much to get a cup of fresh sugarcane. If you are looking for a nutritious, always available yet cheap beverage, sugarcane juice is what you should try in Vietnam. The price of a cup of sugarcane is just VND 5,000 - 10,000, and that depends on the size of the cup you want to have. If you want to add in other fruits, the price should be about VND 15,000 - VND 25,000.
The special taste of sugarcane is not as sweet as syrup or sugar, it is just enough to wake you up. Some people also added a bit of sour taste from kumquat or tangy citrus to enhance the original taste. You can also mix it with pineapple and berries smoothies and make a new refreshing drink.
Because sugarcane juice is an instant beverage and to keep it fresh, most sellers would not make the juice before local customers buy it. It just takes them a few minutes to crush sugarcane stalk into juice by a special machine. To make a cup of about 500ml of sugarcane, they would need to juice 2-3 stalks.
After being extracted, the residue fibers of sugarcane are thrown into a wooden basket in front of the machine. And the sweet-scented of juice is usually contained in an aluminum bowl, then poured into cups of ice. Previously, the juice used to be packed in a plastic bag tied by a rubber band surrounding a straw, but now it is often served in a disposable plastic cup. You can witness this whole process because the machine is installed in the stalls where you stand to make your order.
