Stay updated with the latest news of the COVID-19 situation in Vietnam and information for traveling to Vietnam. Read more here.
A few years back, travelers would not even consider taking public transport due to the confusion on the routes and the hop-on-hop-off methods that most of the locals do there – at least; they seem to know what they’re doing. Everything seemed so chaotic and that taking a taxi straight out of the airport seemed easier. Now, taking airport shuttles has never been easier. The city now has NEW dedicated airport shuttles going straight to District 1 (city center) and the famous Ben Thanh Market.

Now, there are a few color-coded public shuttle buses, such as red, green, and yellow that go around the city. To make things simple, you just need to identify the yellow bus. Here are the 3 different buses that run between the airport and the city center:
Yellow Bus 109 - This is a brand new dedicated air-conditioned shuttle that has been operating since March 2016 and travels between the city center and the airport. To monitor the city’s crimes and safety, buses have security cameras on them. To make this tourist-friendly, the written information on the bus is in both Vietnamese and English. Staff on the bus speak limited English.
Costs: For a 1-way trip, it costs VND 20,000 or (USD $1) and VND 12,000 if you don’t go all the way to the city center. There’s no extra charge for luggage.
Timing: There is a bus every 20-30 minutes, and it operates daily between 5:30 AM – 1 AM. It takes approximately 45 minutes from the airport to 23/9 Park (pronounced 23rd of September Park or "Cong vien Hai Ba Thang Chin in Vietnamese) on Pham Ngu Lao street, right off of the backpacker’s area.
Where it is parked: you can find the bus station right in front of both the domestic and international arrivals' entrances. When you walk out of the terminal arrival, turn right and walk across the median where the car picks up lanes are, and you will see the Vietnamese and English signs pointing your way.
Routes:
The bus routes go via Tan Son Nhat Airport’s international terminal – domestic terminal – Truong Son – Tran Quoc Hoan – Hoang Van Thu – Nguyen Van Troi – Nam Ky Khoi Nghia – Le Duan – Cong Xa Paris – Dong Khoi – Dong Du – Hai Ba Trung – Ton Duc Thang – Ham Nghi – Ben Thanh – Pham Ngu Lao – Nguyen Trai – Le Lai – Nguyen Huu Canh – Cach Mang Thang 8 – Dien Bien Phu – Nam Ky Khoi Nghia – Nguyen Van Troi – Phan Dinh Giot – Truong Son – International terminal
Ticket stall is at the arrival terminal
You would normally have to wait 15 - 30 minutes for the bus
Bus routes information board at the back of the seats
Each ticket costs VND 12,000 for routes under 5 kilometers and VND 20,000 for routes over 5 kilometers. Keep the tickets as the bus assistant will go around and check
All buses are air-conditioned and have cameras and boards to remind you of the routes
Yellow Bus 49 – This is the pricier airport shuttle with a 1-way trip costs VND 40,000 (USD $2). The reason for the doubled prices compared to the Yellow Bus 109 is that they will drop you off directly at your hotel in the city. There is no extra charge for luggage.
Timing: same as Yellow bus 109 above
Routes: same as Yellow bus 109 above
Bus 49 is temporarily canceled because of the lack of funding. Make sure to double-check the updated information at the airport before opting for this shuttle bus.
The red bus has only been introduced since 2019, and it travels to the beach city of Vung Tau. While there are several stops in Saigon's city centers, the bus is more suitable for those traveling to the sandy coastline adjacent to Ho Chi Minh for the cost from VND 80,000 - 160,000 (USD 4 - 8) depending on the distance to your stop.
Timing: There is a bus every 35 - 45 minutes, and the bus starts operating from 6:30 AM - 11:05 PM.
Routes: Tan Son Nhat International Terminal - Truong Son - Tran Quoc Hoan - Hoang Van Thu - Nguyen Van Troi - Nam Ky Khoi Nghia - Dien Bien Phu - Sai Gon Bridge - Ha Noi Highway - Mai Chi Tho - National Highway - 51 Highway - Vo Nguyen Giap - 30/4 Street - Nguyen An Ninh - 2/9 Street - Le Hong Phong - Nam Ky Khoi Nghia - Vung Tau Bus Station
Green Bus 152 – This is a local public bus that travels between the city center and the airport. The cost is much cheaper, but you will need to pay extra if you have luggage.
The price is VND 5,000 (USD $0.25), and additional luggage is another $0.25 per piece. This green bus has more stops than the yellow buses, and the condition is older.
Note: The Green Bus 152 is government operated whereas the other buses are privately owned.

Thank you so much linh! And wondering you know about the motorbike food tour that fetch us and hang around for a half day trip? Any recommendations of company which is reasonable price?
You're welcome! Regarding the motorbike food tour, there are now many tour options available in the city with prices range from $20 - $110 per person for a 3 - 4 hours tour. I would recommend you to choose a reliable company that offers insurance, safety-tested helmet, sturdy motorbikes and drivers, and most importantly, quality food for you to sample. Here, you really get what you pay for.
I'm a little biased because I am part of the i Tour team offering private tours, so I'm recommending the i Love Food motorbike tour: https://www.itourvn.com/tours/i-love-food
Since there are plenty of other tours for you to choose from...just be sure to check the reviews before you book.
Hi thanks for this info. I would like to ask where to find the shuttle bus49? Where it is park?? It is the same location with bus109? If i were to choos i want the shuttle 49 it will drop me off to my hotel. Just want to know how to find the shuttle bus 49 when i arrive at 10pm
Hi, these buses are parked behind one another. If you refer to the last picture of my guide, you will notice that they are all lined up together. If your hotel is in within the bus route, it will drop you off at your hotel. Please notify the attendant your hotel details when you get on at the airport.

I'll be arriving from Phnom Penh via Giant Ibis bus and I need to go to the airport. Can you give me please.
Hi Michael, do you know where your bus will drop you off in HCM? If you're crunch on time, you can hail a VinaSun or MaiLinh taxi directly to the airport. The fee from the city center to the airport is around VND 150,000.
Hi,
Do they take bikes on the buses? W expect a late arrival and need transport for our bags and bikes to the centre.
Stephan
Hi Stephan, you can't take bikes onto the buses. If they're not too bulky, you can try bringing it on as an oversized luggage and pay an extra fee.
Hi Ms Linh, thank you for this very informative guide. My wife and I will be heading to HCMC in a few weeks time (first time in Vietnam, yay!), so hope you can help me out with a query regarding the transport TO the airport instead.
The thing is, my hotel will be fetching us from Tan Son Nhat airport upon our arrival, but not for our return. On our day of departure, is it advisable that we book Grab to bring us back to the airport from the hotel? Or do we take the Yellow Bus No. 49 (and if so, from where?) instead?
We will be staying at 48 - 50 Thu Khoa Huan Street, District 1. Hope I have provided enough information for you to help me out. Appreciate this lots. Thanks!
Hi Adnan, for the ease of convenience, I would suggest you book a Grab Car/Uber or take a VinaSun taxi to the airport from your hotel's location. The fare should be around VND 120,000 - 150,000 or around USD $6. Hope this helps!
Der Ms Linh, thank you so much! Can't wait to holiday in your beautiful country! And happy new year!
Yes, you should pay for the fare on the bus and not to anyone at the bus stops beforehand.
You can hop on the bus at any one of its stops along the route. The 2 most popular stops that tourists take from the city center to the airport are the one on Ham Nghi Street (near the Ben Thanh Market) and the Pham Ngu Lao stop.
Hi, Linh. I would like to ask something.. if the bus operates at 5:30 am till 1 oclock midniight then what if our arrival would be past 12 midnight like 12:45? it would be likely that we wouldn't be able to catch one right? Is there any other possible options other than the bus? thank you so much.
Hi Kryshaine, if your arrival time is at 12:45 am (not including the possibility of a delay), then I would suggest you catch a taxi straight into the city center. The cost is between VND 130,000 - 160,000 (or USD $6 - 8). After you exit the airport terminals, make a left and you should see signs that point you to the taxi lanes.
