Before it being accidentally discovered by a local man in 1991 on a hunting trip, the cave was unknown to the Vietnamese. He had lost his way and was not able to map out the directions back to the cave. In 2009, a group of British researchers/explorers visited the area and was told of the cave discovery by the local man. They were able to map out the cave that led to future expeditions back to Son Doong.

According to the records of experts and photographers, the cave is over 5.5 miles long including a jungle and a river and could fit a 40-story skyscraper with its walls. Son Doong Cave, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh Province, is one of the most charming attractions in Southeast Asia.
